Smart Home Automation

You call your home a (Smart Home) when the devices in your home are connected to the internet. A home automation system should do several things. Here's what to consider when selecting an automation system for your home:

Hub: While a lot of the systems you can control automatically will be independent, finding a hub that controls them all is undeniably the most convenient way to automate your home. This alone may not be the be-all, end-all for your smart home but without a hub that you connect your other smart devices to, your home is much more complicated than it needs to be. If you want something that will connect all your devices under one automated system, a hub will be the universal controller for which you're looking. And, fortunately, a lot of the hubs that you get won't just connect your other devices, but also offer some amazing features, as well. You may consider the Amazon Echo a hub, but it will still read your news and play your music, as will the bulk of its competitors. Some devices have their own hub that will communicate with your home automation hub, and while that can get tricky, it does make it possible for you to use those devices without the additional hub.

Plugs: The beauty of smart plugs is the versatility. Literally anything that uses a power cord to plug into your 110 volt outlet can be controlled by the smart plug and remotely through your phone or through your voice and a hub, if you connect it. That means when you say your child is not allowed to watch television between the hours of 8 pm and 8 am, you mean it. You can turn it off remotely without even confronting them, with a program or remotely. You'll be able to use lamps the same way as you would smart light bulbs, with just a few extra steps in the set up, but with big overall savings on the initial investments. (Though the light bulbs can do colors far better, so keep that in mind, too.)



Security systems: By updating a security system to make it automated, you're not just making it more convenient, you're also making it more secure. The security system that allows you to control it remotely will let you make sure your home and family are safe, even if you're not there and offers more comfort than you can get with a standard system. You can find systems with cameras to monitor your home and record the comings and goings, even when you're not there or when you're asleep. (So no more sneaking in and lying about if your kids are routinely breaking curfew.)



Sounds: The first thing you think of when you think of your smart home's speakers will often be music, but smart speakers will be able to do so much more. You can connect wireless speakers to your WiFi or access it through your mobile device via Bluetooth to play virtually any sound you can think of; that means you can connect your television for a more immersive surround sound effect and use that same device to play your audible book, as well. You can even have the device play white noise for your baby in the nursery when nothing else seems to work. The smart speakers will definitely come in handy.

Thermostats: If you choose the device that will most benefit your home to update first, you'll probably be getting a smart thermostat. By just creating a schedule, you'll be able to save a fortune on your energy bill. You can plan for the range of your preferred temperatures to alternate between narrow range while you're home to keep your family comfortable (say, 68-72 degrees F, for example) and for times when no one is home, you can widen the range up a bit so you're not wasting energy (and money) by cooling a house that has no one home. You'll especially like controlling the temperature (and humidity on several models) remotely so that when you come home from vacation, you won't have to wait for the heat to kick on to feel comfortable in your own home.



Locks: Though it may seem like smart locks go hand in hand with security systems, the locks merit a few specific features highlighted. A smart lock can turn your regular dead bolt lock into a smart one by placing a device atop the locking mechanism to control it remotely from an app or verbally through a smart device hub of some kind. If you'd like to start fresh, installing a smart lock will work a bit more seamlessly, if that convenience is worth the extra cost to you as they do tend to have a slightly steeper cost.

Think about your morning. Each day before you leave the house you have to turn off the lights, the coffee pot, and maybe even the TV-plus lower the thermostat, set the alarm, and lock the door-all while rushing to make your train, beat the traffic, or get your kids to school on time.
